综述缘起 | Origin

1988年出家于福建厦门南普陀寺;1988年至1992年就读并毕业于闽南佛学院;1993年至2000年分别闭关于福建漳州、西藏灵芝、广东翁源东华山,为期七年,证悟本源;出关后,带领僧众复建东华禅寺,十余年来致力于建寺安僧、弘法利生。

Master Wanxing was ordained as a monk in Nanputuo Temple in Xiamen in Fujian Province in 1988. From then, he studied in Minnan Buddhist Academy and graduated in 1992. From 1993 to 2000, he secluded himself in Zhengzhou in Fujian Province, Lingzhi in Tibet and Donghua Mountain in Wengyuan County in Guangdong Province respectively, which lasted for seven years in total and ended in his complete enlightenment. Afterwards, he led the Sangha to recover Donghua Chan Temple. For more than a decade, he has devoted himself to temple building to provide the Sangha a good Bodhimanda and dharma preaching to benefit the sentient beings.

生平履历 | Resume

万行法师,1971年6月出生于湖北随州的一个普通家庭;15岁虔诚信佛;18岁出家于厦门南普陀寺,得偿所愿;21岁受戒于莆田梅峰寺,并发愿要刻苦修学,证悟本源,做一个利益众生的大和尚。

Master Wanxing was born in June, 1971, in a ordinary family in Suizhou City in Hubei Province. He started his sincere belief in Buddhism at the age of 15, and became a monk in Nanputuo Temple in Xiamen City at 18, which fulfilled his wish. When he was 21, he received percepts in Meifeng Temple in Putian City, and vowed to study and cultivate hard to realize Boddhahood and to be a great monk to benefit the sentient beings.

学修历程

Study and cultivation experience

为了提升自身的佛学理论修养,对佛教有一个系统而全面的认识,万行法师于1988年9月进入闽南佛学院学习。在学习期间,万行法师严格要求自己,对佛教经典与佛学知识孜孜以求,全面学修,并于1992年7月学成毕业。

For better culture in Buddhist theory as well as systematic and comprehensive understandings for Buddhism, Master Wanxing started his study in Minnan Buddhist Academy in September in 1988. During his study, he placed strict requirements on himself for deep and wholesome learning on Buddhist classics and doctrines and graduated in July in 1992.

闭关经历 | Seclusion experience

万行法师有感于理论的局限,深知真正的佛法离不开实修,于是于23岁首次闭关于福建漳州瑞竹寺的绝尘洞,为期2年;25岁再次闭关于西藏林芝错高湖的荷花岛,为期2年;27岁第三次闭关于广东韶关翁源县东华禅寺的三圣洞,为期3年。7年闭关,终证本源,如是出关,建寺安僧、弘法利生。

Feeling the limitation of theory and the importance of cultivation and self-experience of Buddhism, Master Wanxing started his first seclusion at the age of 23 in Juechen Cave, Ruizhu Temple, Zhengzhou City, Fujian Province. The seclusion lasted two years. Then again he secluded himself at 23 on the Lotus Island in Cuogao Lake, Linzhi City in Tibet, for two years. When he was 27, he started his third great seclusion in the three saint cave in Donghua Chan Temple in Wengyuan County, Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province, and it accomplished in three years. After 7 years seclusion, he saw Buddha nature himself and attained Buddhahood. Afterwards, he started to build temple for the Sangha and preach Buddha dharma to benefit the sentient being.

复建东华禅寺

The recovery of Donghua Chan Temple

万行法师第三次闭关的东华禅寺,前身为灵鹫寺,由印度高僧智药三藏禅师于南朝梁武帝天监元年(公元502年)创建。唐龙朔元年,六祖惠能于黄梅受衣钵,南归经此寺而隐修,改灵鹫寺为东华禅寺。东华禅寺于唐宋鼎盛,毁于明清。

Donghua Chan Temple, where Master Wanxing conducted his third great seclusion, was called Vulture Temple before, founded by the great monk, Indian Chan Master Zhiyao Tripitaka in the first year in Tianjian Era of Emperor Wu of Liang in Nan Dynasty (502 A.D.). In the first year in Longshuo Era in Tang Dynasty, the six patriarch Huinneng received the transmission of Buddha dharma (from the fifth patriarch) in Huangmei City. On his way to the south, he passed the Vulture Temple and changed its name to Donghua Chan Temple. The temple flourished himself in Tang and Song dynasties and then got destroyed during Ming and Qing dynasties.

出关后,为再现翁源历史名寺的辉煌,在翁源信众的至诚礼请下,万行法师决定复建东华禅寺。从2000年开始,万行法师带领信众,于杳无人迹的东华山上日夜劳作,手执刀斧,开山辟石,斩荆修路。先后兴建了迎宾牌坊、山门、大雄宝殿、法堂、养正堂、了尘阁、自在堂、方丈楼、兜率天,开凿了放生池,南北两厢分别建了客堂、斋堂、僧寮等。

After his seclusion, for the re-glory of renowned temple with long history, Master Wanxing accepted the sincere invitation from Buddhist believers in Wengyuan County and decided to restore the Donghua Chan Temple. Since 2000, Master Wanxing has led the disciples to work day and night in the wild Donghua Mountain to open up a road in the stone piles, thorns and forests. Successively, they have built the Paifang (to welcome guests), Mountain Gate, the Mahavira Grand Hall, Dharma Hall, Righteousness Nurturing Hall, Liaochen Loft, Freedom Hall, Abbot Building, Tusita Heaven and the Freeing Life Pond. In addition, there are also the reception hall, dining hall and living houses for the Sangha on the southern and northern sides of the temple.

所有殿堂造型古朴典雅,佛像法相庄严。历经十余年,一座气势恢宏的寺宇巍然屹立于南粤的群山之中,犹如一颗璀璨的明珠,吸引着十方信众络绎不绝地前来朝圣、参学、求法,真可谓古刹中兴,祖道重光。万行法师为千年禅宗古刹的复兴与佛法的中兴作出了不可磨灭的贡献。

The architectures of the temple are simple, unsophisticated and elegant, with dignified Buddha sculptures and dharma form. After more than a decade’s work, a magnificent temple has been built, standing in the mountains in the south Guangdong, like a radiating pearl, attracting countless disciples from all over the world for pilgrimage, study and Buddha dharma. Now the historical temple and previous patriarchs’ teachings come into their second life again. In the recovery of the temple and the revival of Buddha dharma, Master Wanxing has done remarkable and indelible contribution.

创立东华家风

The creation of Donghua doctrine

十多年来,万行法师严格管理寺院,带领四众弟子恪守丛林清规戒律,创立东华家风“信教先爱国,学佛先做人,修道先发心”,遵从祖训“农禅并重, 堂上坐禅,堂下禅做,一日不作,一日不食”,白天率领四众弟子出坡劳动,建寺安僧,晚上领众修学,参禅打坐,为弟子讲经说法,答疑解惑。

For more than ten years, Master Wanxing manages the Donghua Chan Temple with rigor. He leads the fourfold assembly to adhere faithfully to the monastic precepts, create Donghua doctrine “love your country before believing Buddhism, conduct oneself before learning Buddhism, vow before cultivating”, follow the old doctrine “place equal emphasis on farming and Chan; practice sitting medication and apply it in every life; one day no work, one day no eating”. During daytime, he leads the fourfold assembly to work in the field, build the temple for the Sangha; at night, he guides the disciples to learn how to cultivate, conduct sutra teachings, answer their questions and help to clarify their doubts.

创立东华禅 | Creation of Donghua Chan

万行法师根据自己三十年对佛法的修学和十多年真修实证的经验,又汲取了古人的智慧精华,同时结合当代众生的根基,将理论和实践相结合,总结出了一套完整的修学理念与修行方法,创立了“东华禅”,延禅宗之血脉,续佛祖之慧命。“东华禅”字字直达本源,句句直指修行核心,是万行法师修学佛法几十年的思想结晶,也是禅宗心法的浓缩与提炼。

Based on his more than thirty years’ knowledge and cultivation on Buddhism and over a decade’s experience about combining Buddhist cultivation and application, Master Wanxing learns from the essence of our ancestors’ wisdom, combines the theory and application to summarize a set of cultivation theory and approaches based on the specific situations of sentient beings nowadays, and creates Donghua Chan, which extends the lineage of Chan School and inherits the life power of ancient patriarch’s wisdom. Every word of Donghua Chan describes the very origination of the universe; every sentence points out the most essential part of self-cultivation. It is the fruition of Master Wanxing’s long years’ Buddhist cultivation experience and also the essence of Mind dharma of Chan School.

“东华禅”源于释迦牟尼佛的思想------以人为本,众生平等;以做人为基础,以成佛为目标。

Donghua Chan originates from Shakyamuni Buddha’s theory: human being centered and all sentient beings inherently equal; based on self-conduction and aiming at Buddhahood.

“东华禅”源于祖师禅的手法:不怕妄念起,只怕觉知迟。在行住坐卧中培养觉知,成为觉知,运用觉知。

Donghua Chan originates from the approaches of Bodhidharma Chan: no fear of arising idle thoughts but fear late awareness. Develop awareness in walking, living, sitting and sleeping until one becomes awareness itself, and apply awareness in everyday life.

“东华禅”以人为本,借事炼心,觉悟人生,奉献人生。目的是落实佛教人间化,开创人间净土,成就人间菩萨。

Donghua Chan is human centered, advocating cultivating our mind among life happenings, self-awakening and self-devotion. Its main purpose is to apply Buddhism in the society, to create pure land and nurture Bodhisattvas in the mundane world.

“东华禅”将信仰落实于生活,将修行落实于当下,将佛法融入世间,将个人融入大众。在工作中修行,在修行中工作,在尽责中修福报,在觉照中修智慧,在奉献中修解脱。

Donghua Chan applies belief into our life, and integrate the cultivation to here and now, Buddha dharma into the mundane world and individuals into the assembly. Cultivate in work, work in cultivation, accumulate merits in fulfilling our responsibilities, develop wisdom in awareness and cultivate self-liberation in devotion.

“东华禅”首在发心,重在行愿。发四无量心,修四摄六度,行十大愿王。虚空有尽,行愿无穷。

Donghua Chan starts from resolution and is perfected through practice and vows. Make the four immeasurable states of mind, cultivate the four methods of winning people over and six perfections, and practice the ten great-vow king. The emptiness is finite while the practice of great vows is infinite.

“东华禅”功法:目前无法意目前,闭目开眼往前看,有眼无珠人不识,一目了然观大千,剔目瞠眉黑变白,绵密不绝,能所脱空知已灭,原来家风依旧,学佛做人,做人学佛。

The practice approach of Donghua Chan:

No dharma in one’s eyes, he fails to guard his thoughts (One cannot guard his thoughts by his naked eyes);

Eyes closed, look forward (Close one’s naked eyes, and put his attention in front by his third eye which is between his eyebrows);

Without pupils, the eye is never recognized (The third eye is invisible by our naked eyes);

With the eye, the whole universe is clear and observable (The whole universe is under observation of the third eye when one reaches a certain stage of medication);

Without the eyes, the forehead gradually turns from darkness into brightness (When practice continues, the darkness will turn into brightness with our naked eyes closed);

Thick and ceaseless, extinguish the knower and the known (Now one can realize his self-nature, which is ceaseless awareness);

Same as it essentially being, one founds its home (One’s self-natures is always there but never noticed, so when one realizes it through practice, one feels liking returning home).

Learn Buddhism in self-conducting and conduct oneself by learning Buddhism.

“东华禅”心法:善护念,清净心,常觉无住。

The mind dharma of Donghua Chan: guard the thoughts, purity the mind and being free from attachments.

学修“东华禅”必读的经论:《普贤菩萨行愿品,圆觉经,维摩诘经,心经,六祖坛经,金刚经,楞严经,楞伽经》龙树菩萨的六论:《中观论,精研论,回诤论,七十空性论,六十正理论,宝鬘论》。

讲经说法 | Sutra preaching and dharma lecturing

万行法师的佛学思想随着与社会实践的结合,逐步形成了东华禅的理念。十余年来,他讲课过万场,足迹遍布全国、港澳台及亚洲各地,尤其是在台湾、日本、韩国佛教界享有盛誉,让中国佛教走向了世界,更让禅宗文化广为人知。

With the combination of Master Wanxing’s Buddhist theory and its application in society, the main doctrine of Donghua Chan is gradually developed. During the past ten years, he has conducted more than ten thousand lectures and travelled all over China, to Hong-kong, Macau and different places in Asia. He has a great reputation, especially in the Buddhist community in Taiwan, Japan and Korea. He has brought Chinese Buddhism into the world, and furthermore, he has made the Chan culture widely known to the public.

响应号召走出国门

The answering to the call to go outside of China

2016年3月23日,为响应国家号召的“一带一路”战略,万行法师率领48名佛弟子,到印度展开海上丝绸之路的佛教文化交流。首次给印度佛教最高学府那烂陀大学和德里大学佛学系赠送乾隆大藏经,还资助那烂陀大学把大藏经翻译成印度文,并为贫困大学生提供助学金。同时万行法师还在佛陀成道的菩提树下为印度信众剃度,这在中国佛教史上还属先例。

On 23rd, March, 2016, to answer the national call of the “belt and road“ principle, Master Wanxing led 48 disciples to India for the Buddhist culture exchange of the marine silk road. For the first time, the Qianlong Tripitaka (Great Treasury of Sutras) was given to the highest Buddhist institute of India, Nalanda University and the department of Buddhism in the University of Delhi. Furthermore, a fund was offered to Nalanda University for the translation of Tripitaka from Chinese to Indian as well as to students with financial difficulties as scholarships. Meanwhile, Master Wanxing also conducted the ordainment for some Indian disciples under the bodhi tree where Shakyamuni Buddha attained enlightenment, which was the first case in Chinese Buddhist history.

致力公益慈善 | Commitment to the philanthropy

十余年来,万行法师以实修实证取信于人,以道德慈悲感化人,并致力于公益慈善事业,坚持只做不说的务实原则,默默地回报社会,因此荣获了粤港两地“公益之星”的称号,“美丽南粤,德善相随”广东年度贡献人物奖,并被授予广东省慈善总会终身理事,为促进和谐社会、幸福人生作出了积极贡献。

For over a decade, Maser Wanxing convinces people by his self-cultivation and attainments, and affects people by his virtue and compassion. Meanwhile, he engages in public welfare and charity, applies the principle “deeds speak louder than words” and keeps doing contributions to the society. Due to his deeds, he was rewards as the “Star of Public Welfare” of Guangdong Province and Hong-Kong, the prize of annual contribution in the event “Beautiful Southern Guangdong, together with virtue and kindness” in Guangdong Province. In addition, he has been granted as a tenure member of the Consolidated Benevolent Association in Guangdong Province for this great contribution to developing a harmony society and bringing the mankind a happy life.

禅宗文化调研基地 | Chan Culture Research Base

东华禅寺原本属于禅宗道场,在万行法师的恢复和管理下,制定了八禅文化的修学方向和发展计划。时至今日,东华禅寺已举办各类禅修活动过百场。

经中国社会科学院世界宗教研究所考察,批准中国社会科学院佛教研究中心在东华禅寺设立禅宗文化调研基地。目的是将禅宗文化博大精深的智慧普及世间,使它成为一种人生态度,一种生活方式,一种生命品质与生命境界,从而推动社会的和谐、稳定、文明与进步。

Donghua Chan Temple was originally a Chan Bodhimanda. After the restoration and under the management of Master Wanxing, eight cultivation directions of Chan Culture and development plans have been made. Until now, more than one hundred activities of Chan Cultivation have been held in Donghua Chan Temple.

After the inspection of the Institute of World Religions in Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Buddhist Research Center of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has been granted to found a Chan Culture Research Base in Donghua Chan Temple. Its main purpose is to bring the broad and profound wisdom of Chan culture to the mundane world as a life attitude, a lifestyle, a kind of life quality and state, so as to enhance the harmony, stability, civilization and development of the society

1998年担任东华禅寺住持;

Since 1998, Master Wanxing has been the Abbot of Donghua Chan temple;

2002年3月当选为翁源县政协委员;

In March 2002, Master Wanxing was elected as a committee member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in Wengyuan County;

2003年10月当选为翁源县佛教协会会长;

In October 2002, Master Wanxing was elected as the president of the Buddhist Association in Wengyuan County;

2005年元月当选为翁源县政协常委; 同年1月荣获粤港两地“公益之星”称号,并担任广东省慈善总会终身理事;

In January 2005, Master Wanxing was elected as a standing committee member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in Wengyuan County; in January the same year, he was awarded as the “Star of Public Welfare“ of Guangdong Province and Hong-kong and elected as a tenure executive member of the Consolidated Benevolent Association in Guangdong Province;

2008年10月东华禅寺复建落成庆典,荣任方丈;

In May 2011, Master Wanxing was elected as the vice president of the Buddhist Association, the vice president of the Oversea Friendship Association and the vice president of the Religious Culture Exchange Association in Shaoguan City.

2012年当选为韶关市人大代表;

In 2012, Master Wanxing was elected as the deputy to people’s congress in Shaoguan City;

2014年当选广东省佛教协会副秘书长

In 2014, Master was elected as the deputy secretary-general of Buddhist Association of Guangdong Province.

多年来,万行法师恪守丛林清规戒律,以更高的标准、更严格的要求管理寺院,不断完善寺院的各项管理和规章制度。因此东华禅寺道风纯正,秩序井然,曾数次被评为省市“模范宗教活动场所”、“和谐寺观教堂”。

For years, Master Wanxing strictly follows the monastic rules of Bodhimanda, manages the temple with high standards and strict rules and continuously improves the principles and regulations for temple management. Therefore, the Donghua Chan Temple is famous for its wholesome and pure cultivation environment as well as its good order, and has been rewarded as the “Model of Religious Activity Place” and “Harmonious Buddhist Temple”.

2013年在十八大及两会期间,中宣部授意《文汇报》中国佛教专版,对万行法师进行了深度专题报道,尤其对万行法师的微博给予了高度评价,称之为“阳光微博”。中央统战部《中国统一战线》杂志“2013年两会增刊”也对万行法师进行了专题报道。

During the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the Two Conferences in 2013, inspired by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China, the Buddhism special issue of Newspaper Wenhui conducted a deep special report about Master Wanxing. His microblog was highly praised as “Sunshine Microblog”. In the same, the special issue for the Two Conferences in 2013 of the magazine “Chinese United Front” of the United Front Work Department also gave a special report about Master Wanxing.
